Commonly discovered conditions

Presbyopia

This farsightedness is commonly experienced by people over 40,and you might initially notice difficulty reading small print. Fortunately, the right reading glasses can help.

Astigmatism

Experienced by all ages, the shape of the cornea or lens can mean that it's hard to focus, and your vision at night becomes blurry. Glasses, contact lenses and even laser surgery are effective.

Floaters, flashes or 'cobwebs'

You might notice flickering lights, small specks or strands floating through your vision, especially when you're looking at a bright background, like a screen. If you experience a sudden onset of any of these symptoms, it is important to see an eye specialist urgently.

Cataracts

If you've seen some yellowish clouding in your vision, struggled with bright light, had difficulty reading or driving at night, you may be developing cataracts. They're increasingly common in over 50s, and have a range of treatment options.

Dry eye syndrome and Blepharitis

A feeling of grittiness, burning, sore or itchy eyes that can also make contact lenses feel very uncomfortable. You might also notice eyes watering, blurred vision, or red eyes. Conjunctivitis or 'pink eye'

Children are especially prone to the sore, red eyes and sticky eyelashes of this infection. After a quick diagnosis, we can recommend the right treatment for the irritation and get your eyes healthy again.

Diabetic retinopathy

1 in 17 people in the UK is diagnosed with diabetes, which can have a serious effect on your eye health and vision. But thorough, regular eye tests let you know what to expect early and keep track of any impact on your eyesight.

Glaucoma

Known as ‘the silent enemy', glaucoma affects over 2% of over 40s. If left untreated, it can lead to blindness, and the symptoms can be so gradual that many don't notice in time. A Bayfields eye test can prevent glaucoma slipping by unnoticed.

Age-related macular degeneration

The most common cause of sight loss in the UK, people tend to first notice it in their 50s and 60s. Treatment can be difficult, so early detection is incredibly important.
