guide to ear wax removal and how to prepare for your appointment

How to Prepare for Ear Wax Removal at Bayfields Audiologists

Read on for all you need to know about the process and what you’ll need to do before your ear wax removal appointment.

What Is Ear Wax and Why It Builds Up

Ear wax, or cerumen, is your ear’s natural defence - it protects against dust, bacteria, and debris. But when it builds up excessively, it can lead to discomfort, hearing loss, and even infections. Common causes of build up include frequent use of earbuds, hearing aids, and improper cleaning techniques like using cotton buds.

Signs You May Need Ear Wax Removal

You might benefit from ear wax removal if you experience:

  • Reduced hearing clarity

  • A feeling of fullness in the ear

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

  • Mild earache or dizziness

If any of these sound familiar, it’s a good time to consider a professional ear check.

Why Choose Microsuction?

At Bayfields, we use microsuction, a safe, gentle method performed by trained audiologists. Unlike syringing, microsuction doesn’t involve water and offers a more comfortable, controlled experience.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

1. Use Ear Drops in Advance
To soften the wax, apply olive oil or an over-the-counter ear softener for 3–5 days before your visit. This helps make removal faster and more effective.

2. Keep Your Ears Dry
Avoid swimming or getting water in your ears during the preparation period, especially if you're using softeners.

3. Skip Cotton Buds
Don’t try to clean your ears yourself - cotton buds push wax deeper, making things worse.

4. Know What to Expect
Your audiologist will examine your ear canal using a special light (otoscope) and then use a gentle suction device to remove wax. The whole process typically takes 20–30 minutes.

How Much Does Ear Wax Removal Cost?

Microsuction ear wax removal from Bayfields Opticians & Audiologists costs £75. This cost covers one or two ears and includes a follow-up appointment to check on your progress after the removal procedure. If we find you don’t need ear wax removal, there is only a £20 charge payable.
